Japan Society Presents: ONE YEAR LATER, a Commemoration of the Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan
Motoatsu Sakurai, President of Japan Society speaks on the one-year anniversary
Today, March 11, 2012, marks the one-year anniversary ofthe earthquake, tsunami and nuclear disaster that hit the coast of northern Japan. To commemoratethe disaster, lives lost and rebuilding the country, Japan Society (333E. 47th St., New York, NY) presents “One Year Later: a Day of Reflection.” Held today from 11am-5pm, it’s several programs andevents showcasing the country’s resilience, to include events forchildren as well as films that documented the aftermath.
A photographyexhibit entitled, “Memory: Things We Should Never Forget” will be on display (throughMay 27) with 47 photos of “the optimism and resilience of local people as theystruggle to rebuild their lives.” Ambassador Shigeyuki Hiroki, Consul Generalof Japan in New York will provide remarks at 2:30pm and a moment of silence will be at 2:46pm, the exact moment the disaster hit.
On Friday, March 11, 2011, the Great East Japan Earthquake with a 9.0 magnitude hit the coastal region of Sendai, Japan, “causing devastation along a 700km stretch of coastland on the north east of Japan’s Honshu Island.” With waves coming in at 133 ft., and landing six miles inland, it is one of Japan’s worst recorded natural disasters, according the Japanese Red Cross Society.
