Daptone Records: 10 years of soul music
Daptone Records is mainly known for popular soul acts such as Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Budos Band and Charles Bradley, but you wouldn’t know it by their label location in the Brooklyn neighborhood of Bushwick.
Housed in an otherwise nondescript brownstone, the label recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary with a short documentary on how the “House of Soul” was built. Literally, Daptone co-owner Neal Sugarman, Sharon Jones (and others) put nails to wall, while Charles Bradley did the electrical wiring. 10 years later, this same heart and dedication has garnered the label and its artists a near cult following, selling out venues around the country.
So peep the short film on Brooklyn’s own Daptone Records, which was directed by Rufus Campbell.
