New Video: Jamie Lidell – “You Naked”
A few days ago electro-funk singer Jamie Lidell premiered his new music video “You Naked,” the third track from his upcoming self-titled album – out February 18/19 on Warp.
According to Jamie’s label, “The video sees Lidell performing inside a giant light cube, created using realtime projected graphics triggered by the movement of his microphone stand. The technology was conceived by London-based studio Flat-e, who shot and directed the video without any post-production effects, and have also worked with him on the forthcoming solo live show and artwork.”
Lidell released another song from the album last week, “why_ya_why;” as the lead single “What a Shame” was presented late last year.

Mini-Review: Tokyo Dawn Records – The Boogie Volume 3: Various Artists
German indie label Tokyo Dawn Records is one of my go-to labels for eclectic and funky sounds. Recently dropping the third installment of its electro-boogie series, The Boogie, Volume 3 --which is a heady mix of soul, funk, disco, and hip-hop but with an ear toward 80′s synths and early hip-hop. Though earlier volumes focused on 80′s and 90′s R&B, this 17-track compilation pays homage to early hip-hop and the P-Funk era– with their variation of “future, intergalactic funk.”
Featuring an array of hip-hop and soul creatives from across the U.S. and beyond (Spain, Sweden, Russia), Volume 3 highlights producers and singers such as DJ Vadim, Opolopo, Amalia, Erik Rico, Reggie B, Stacy Epps, Stan Smith, Teeko, Wagon Cookin, and many more.
For fans of early Prince, Roger Troutman, George Clinton/Parliament-Funkadelic.
The Boogie Volume 3 released on September 24th via Tokyo Dawn Records.

Plantlife, "Time Traveller"
Following their 2004 debut release The Return of Jack Splash, Plantlife’s (Jack Splash and Panda 1) latest Time Traveller (Decon/K7/Rapster) has elements of hip hop on it but it also mixes electro, R&B, funk and rock to create an out-of-this-world, experimental, genre-defying sound. Stand-outs: title track, “Your Love” “Rollerskate Jam” “Don’t Go Around Looking For a Broken Heart” and “Fool For U”. Honestly, just press ‘play’ and go about doing whatever (or whomever) you like… Peter Hadar, Well Dressed for Future Music
Self-proclaimed “Cool Weirdo” and futuristic R&B singer-songwriter Peter Hadar is bringing something fresh and well, weird, to the sometimes-stale radio waves.
The New Jersey-native’s latest record, Well Dressed for the Art Show (Cool Weirdo Music) is chock-full of hard-hitting galactic beats and intriguing lyricism.
If you’ve seen the video for “Planets” (which features the ever-beautiful Selita Ebanks), you know Peter’s from a different world of music. While “Purple Pills (Sleeping Pills Remix)” and “Ocean Wet” are the most sensuously, erotic tracks on the album (they made me blush, which is hard!); “RSVP” will get you moving towards the dance floor. Other noteworthy tracks: “Laugh Together” and “Painted”.
If you ever have the chance to catch Peter Hadar LIVE – do! Recently caught his performance at Santos Party House here in NYC (along with other amazing artists like Maiysha, YahZarah, Cecilia Stalin and TreZure Empress) – and the man’s energy is RIDICULOUS!
Okay, so Peter’s upcoming shows … April 26th, 8pm, Shrine (2271 Adam Clayton Powell Jr. Blvd, Harlem, 10030, 212.690.7807). May 6th, 8pm, Public Assembly (70 North 6th St., Brooklyn, 11211, 718.384.4586).
LotusFlow3r, MPLsound, Elixer
The album features two separate Prince cds, LotusFlow3r and MPLsound, plus one, Elixer, showcasing his latest protege, Bria Valente. Available exclusively at Target, it’s not as obscure as Planet Earth yet it’s still all-around Prince.
MPLsound
? This is the Prince we all know and love: sexy, funky and fun. From the start of jump-off track “(There’ll Never B) Another Like Me” my body was rocking. “Valentina” brings Prince into full-form seduction mode. “Ol’ Skool Company” is just a funky dedication to the Minneapolis sound.Overall, the entire set is enjoyable – and well-worth the $11.98 price tag.
Flashback Thursday: Cameo
Cameo’s lead man Larry Blackmon may be most known for the red crotch-cup he rocked during the 80′s however, the band reigned with many popular R&B dance hits during the 70′s and 80′s: “Shake Your Pants” “Flirt” “Word Up” “Candy” “Back and Forth” “She’s Strange” and “Single Life”.An Oasis of Funk: Dam-Funk, Rhythm Trax, V.4
There’s a funk and boogie revolution going on in Culver City, California — and it goes down every Monday night, thanks to resident DJ/boogie collector Dam-Funk a.k.a the ”Ambassador of Boogie Funk.”
Flashback Thursday: The Time
Most funk-aficionados would agree that even though R&B band The Time released their self-titled The Time EP in ’81 — their “official” debut was the gem What Time Is It? a year later. Admittedly, Prince’s hands and footprints are all over, in and around the first album on tracks such as “Get It Up” and “Girl.” Matter of fact all the vocals are Prince and Morris Day.All Are Welcomed
How can one describe Stones Throw’s newest “it” boy, Spokane, Washington-native James Pants? Is he hip hop? New Wave? Electro-Funk-ala Cameo or Chromeo? Fact is – James Pants is all of it.
The singer slash musician slash beat creator is 80’s soul, early hip hop, new wave, post-punk disco, all of which can be found on Welcome where Mr. Pants toys with drums, keys, guitar and sings. He’s funny. He’s sorta like a new millenium Prince in-the-making – putting out whatever the hell he wants. He doesn’t take himself too seriously. I mean he’s a white boy from Spokane putting out soul and hip hop.

Psychedelic Soul Rocks!
J*DaVeY is a cross between Erykah Badu, Prince and The Police. There. J*DaVeY is female vocalist Briana Cartright (who performs under the moniker Jack Davey) and male producer Brook D’Leau. Yep. Jack is a girl, and Brook is a guy. Identities aside, this duo has no problem mixing genres of neo-soul, electro-funk, new wave, alternative hip hop and jazz – you could say J*DaVeY is grits, eggs, toast and jam all mashed up. Their sound is quite delicious.
The Los Angeles duo has even opened for Prince at his 3121 Supper Club at the Rio in Las Vegas. (For a guy who never has opening acts – that speaks volumes!)
The Land holds its own with the sexy “Rock The Dancehall” with Kardinal Offishall, “Just Because” featuring Phonte from Little Brother and a live 2006 performance of “No More” at the Temple Bar in Santa Monica.
J*DaVeY is the future of electro-funk and soul. Definitely be on the listen.
