“Jazz on the Green” presents Robert Glasper Experiment this Friday, Oct 26
HOUSTON, TEXAS – Robert Glasper, the jazz pianist and High School for the Performing and Visual Arts alum, returns to Houston for a special performance of his jazz and hip-hop fusion at downtown’s Discovery Green, on Friday, October 26. With guest opener: HSPVA Jazz Orchestra.
Robert Glasper Experiment consists of Glasper on piano and Fender Rhodes, Casey Benjamin on vocoder and sax, bassist Derrick Hodge, and drummer Chris Dave.
In an interview with the Houston Chronicle earlier this year, Glasper spoke about his newly released fourth album, Black Radio (Blue Note Records), saying that he “wanted to create a project that could withstand the casualties of the poor quality of music that’s being shoved down our throats by mainstream radio.” He continues: “For this album, I really did it for the urban mainstream audience, because that’s what’s missing in jazz. I wanted to do stuff that the audience would love.” Hip-hop and R&B vibes fuel the record but at the heart of it, jazz is the word.
Grammy-nominee and noted jazz-R&B singer Ledisi, who’s one of many features on the LP, says, ”It [Black Radio] reminds me of a show that Robert would give where he’d have all of his friends come and hang with him, and just sing or write anything or make up something on the spot. But what I love about it; is that it’s introducing the world to his world, and that’s what’s special about it.”
Robert’s friends include a large list of respected neo-soul, R&B and hip-hop artists: Erykah Badu, Bilal, Lalah Hathaway, Lupe Fiasco, Chrisette Michele, Musiq Soulchild, Me’Shell Ndegeocello, Shafiq Husayn (Sa-Ra), Stokely Williams (Mint Condition) and yasiin bey (Mos Def).
Ledisi says, “He understands all music, not just jazz. He understands R&B, hip-hop. He’s worked with everybody. So there’s nothing he can’t do. And that’s what I admire about him; he’s very special in that way.”
On October 9, Glasper released Black Radio Recovered: The Remix EP, that includes new mixes by ?uestlove, 9th Wonder, Pete Rock, and Georgia Anne Muldrow, among others.
Watch the above video featuring “Gonna Be Alright” by Ledisi as well as the title track “Black Radio” by yasiin bey. If you haven’t heard it yet, also take a listen to “Ah Yeah” featuring Chrisette Michele and Musiq Soulchild, which was the first single released from Black Radio, and one of my favorite tracks on the entire project.

New Video: Ledisi – “Bravo”
One of my faves: R&B diva Ledisi brings her new video “Bravo,” where she tackles stereotypes. The song is from her latest LP Pieces of Me (Verve Music Group), which was released last summer. The video is directed by Erica D. Hays, who also filmed the Cali-based singer’s last visual, “So Into You.”
Ledisi Performs "Bravo" on Tonight Show with Jay Leno
Though Ledisi starts at 38:18, Betty White and Gerard Butler are pretty hilarious to watch too!

Ledisi – "Higher Than This" (New Video)
Flashback Thursday: Sexy Soul Tour 2009, Houston, TX, October 29, 2009
They always say, better late than never. Back in October of this year, experienced the Sexy Soul Tour 2009 in Houston, Texas at Verizon Wireless Theatre, which featured Eric Benet, Mint Condition and Ledisi.
Though the theatre was only half-full, Ledisi’s rock and soul performance started the night promptly at 8:15pm. Sporting a dreadloc’d faux-hawk, multi-belt jacket, leather pants and six-inch stilettos, Ledisi churned out tune after tune from her latest hit album, Turn Me Loose and her debut, Lost and Found. Giving equal parts Baptist church and juke joint, her set was full-on high energy, sex appeal and soul-stirring testifying. The hits: “Knockin” “Everything Changes” “Turn Me Loose” “Higher Than This” “Alright” and a cover of “Happy Feeling” that would’ve had Frankie Beverly beaming with joy. But it was her over-the-top performance of “In The Morning” that had the audience on its knees. The only way to sort of describe it: it was somewhere between a Broadway show slash gospel stage-play slash lounge act slash Sunday morning in a Southern Baptist church. Yeah, that’s the best I could do.
Following Ledisi (which was a very hard thing to do!) was Minneapolis funksters Mint Condition, who actually held their own with several old and new tracks. Read: “You Got Me Swingin’ “I’m Ready” “Nothing Left To Say” “Moan” “What Kind of Man Would I Be,” a killer “Heartbreak Hotel” dedication to MJ, and the much-anticipated closing number, “Pretty Brown Eyes.” However, it was their mid-set band battle that wowed us the most. Jeffrey on keys jumped on sax, while lead singer Stokley hopped on rhythm guitar and then switched to a second set of drums to bang it out with the drummer. It was pure ROCKSTAR SHIT!
To be honest, no diss to Eric Benet as a Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter but by the time he hit the stage, the crowd (and ME!) were definitely still in the mood for more dancing and singing – but all we got were mostly ballads in the form of ”Chocolate Legs” “Love, Patience and Time” “Spanish Fly” “I Wanna Be Loved” “Spend My Life With You” and “You’re The Only One.” I mean he is a balladeer, and it was nearing 11pm – so we collectively joined the movement.

Ledisi, It’s Christmas
Jazz, soul and rhythm and blues songstress Ledisi’s new holiday cd It’s Christmas (Verve Forecast) feels more Sunday Brunch than Christmas but definitely in a good way.

Lost, Now Found – Ledisi
How did I miss this release?? Don’t answer that. Nonetheless, with a first name meaning “to bring forth,” singer and songwriter Ledisi is finally in the forefront of the music industry.
Influenced by jazz, oft-compared to Ella Fitzgerald for her scat style of singing, and after years on the independent circuit of the San Francisco music scene, this soul singer finally dropped her first major-label cd, Lost & Found (Verve Records).
Filled with jazz and soul influences drenched in love is what makes this album incredibly delicious. Must-listen to tracks: the bittersweet “In The Morning,” the lovely “You and Me,” the beautifully short “We Are One,” and the nostalgic “Someday.” A must-buy.
