Santogold says "Shove It"
Santogold alas Santi White has one impressive resume: a Philadelphia born, Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn-based electro pop singer, songwriter, producer; former A&R rep; former Weslayan University double-major; former leading lady for alternative punk band Stiffed. She was the opening act for alternative rock band ColdPlay’s Viva La Vida tour; and now she’s headlining her first solo tour. And that’s the short list. Whew!
On the underground for a few years, Santogold’s self-titled debut Santogold has made Rolling Stone and Spin call her “one artist to watch in 2008.”
Truth be told, it’s taken me a minute to get into Santogold’s sound. A sister who doesn’t do R&B. C’mon! She’s been quoted as saying, “Everyone is just so shocked that I don’t like R&B.” But tracks like “Creator” and “Starstruck” will hook and nab a many. Honestly what’s not to like about a song like “Shove It” with lyrics as in-your-face as “we think you’re joke / shove your hope where it don’t shine.”
Oh nearly forgot, if you want to catch Santogold’s show, she’ll be playing at TLA (Theatre of the Living Arts, 334 South Street) here in Philly, September 23rd @ 8pm. Tickets are $23 in advance, $25 at the door.
