Day 11 of 28 Days: Whitney Houston – “My Love Is Your Love” (1998)
What’s black [music]? I’ve been trying to figure this out since I’ve been in this business. I don’t know know how to sing black — and I don’t know how to sing white either. I know how to sing. Music is not a color to me. It’s an art.” – Whitney Houston
Today marks the one-year anniversary of Whitney Houston’s passing. With a career that spans over 20 years and includes many text-worthy tracks, “My Love Is Your Love” is one of my favorites for its reggae vibe. Wyclef Jean and Jerry Duplessis produced the song; it was the title track from the pop icon’s fourth studio album of the same name. Released in late 1998, the LP featured three top five Billboard songs, to include “Heartbreak Hotel” (with Faith Evans and Kelly Price), “It’s Not Right, But It’s Okay” and the title track “My Love Is Your Love,” which became her third biggest selling hit of all time.
Madame Tussauds remembers Whitney Houston
On Thursday, February 7th, Madame Tussauds New York unveiled their newest wax figures — four to be exact, of iconic singer Whitney Houston, representing the artist “in four different points of her life.” It’s the first time in the museum’s 200-year history that figures have been created for one subject.
“Each of the wax figures [pictured above] will be featured in a unique pose and costume, recreating a significant moment of Houston’s incredible career,” as stated on Madame Tussauds website.
In attendance at the ceremony on yesterday was Houston’s mom Cissy, her sister-in-law and former manager, Pat Houston as well as Whitney’s brother Gary. The wax replicas will become permanent exhibits at all Madame Tussauds U.S. attractions, including Washington, D.C., L.A. and Las Vegas.
Though Whitney’s daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown wasn’t there, the budding actress did take to Twitter to say: ”I would truly like 2 Thank @MadameTussauds not only 1•But 4 wax sculptures4my mother(:••very grateful&TrulyThankyou!•• They’re phenomenal•xO”

Day 5 of 28 Days: “WAITING TO EXHALE” Soundtrack (1995)
Whether you enjoyed the film or not, the soundtrack to Waiting to Exhale included some of the biggest names in pop, soul and gospel music, including Whitney Houston, Chaka Khan, Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle and CeCe Winans. With newcomers Mary J. Blige, Faith Evans, SWV and Brandy bringing a younger flavor to the mix, well-known music producer Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds shaped the incredible sound, in turn churning out Top 10 Billboard singles such as “Exhale (Shoop Shoop),“ Sittin’ Up In My Room” and “Not Gon’ Cry.”
The 1995 film adaptation of Terry McMillian’s best-selling 1992 novel starred Whitney Houston, Angela Bassett, Loretta Devine and Lela Rochon; actor Forrest Whitaker made his directorial debut with the movie. According to Entertainment Weekly, the Waiting to Exhale sequel, Getting to Happy, is still in development.

New Video: “Celebrate” feat. Whitney Houston & Jordin Sparks
About a week ago, Sony Pictures released the official music video for the Whitney Houston-Jordin Sparks duet “Celebrate”, which is the first single of the soundtrack to the film “Sparkle” –in theatres August 17, and the last song recorded by Houston.
In a recent interview with BET.com, Sparks describes the story behind the concept for the video: “We planned on it being Whitney and me, but she’s not here, so we wanted to make it a tribute to her. So it’s fun, upbeat and exciting — there are clips from the movie and the main cast is in the video, too. It’s me, Tika Sumpter, Carmen Ejogo, Derek Luke, Omari Hardwick, Goapele is in it and Mike Epps. We’re all just having a good time [and the premise is] they all come over to my house singing along to Whitney’s music. And we’re missing her and celebrating her as well. It’s actually pretty simple, but when you watch it and hear her voice along with it, it makes it so much more”.
Disco Queen Thelma Houston headlines Discovery Green’s “Rainbow on the Green”
“Rainbow on the Green” is part of Houston’s LGBT Pride Celebration held at Discovery Green on Friday night (June 22). The event ushered in disco diva Thelma Houston to perform her 1977 hit “Don’t Leave Me This Way”, among other tunes.
Hosted by local talent Tye Blue, festivities included “appearances” by Adele, and Beyoncé impersonator Tyonce’ Moore, as well as loving tributes to the late Whitney Houston and Donna Summer.
After performing her signature disco-soul classic, Ms. Houston shared her newest single “Gliding on Love” – a thumping electro-club jam that’s now available on iTunes.

29 Day Wrap Up
I started writing down songs from memory on January 1st and came up with about 50. By the time February rolled around and I started posting, I had close to 100! But it became such a fun project that choosing an album or song per day was the most exciting part. I realized a lot of the music I listened to back then has seriously shaped what I listen to today. From R&B, soul and hip-hop to indie rock, pop and electro, my love for it all started back, back in the day.

| The Hood Internet – “When The Night Knows” (Whitney Houston x Chromeo mashup) |
Since Whitney Houston’s untimely passing a week ago, music lovers like myself are aiming to keep her legacy alive through song and dance. So I’ve been combing the Internet for fitting music tributes and today I came across The Hood Internet’s genius creation. The Chicago-based mashup DJs have blended Whitney’s “How Will I Know” with backing instrumentals from Canadian duo Chromeo’s “When The Night Falls.” The result: “When The Night Knows,” a funky blend of pop, R&B and electro grooves. I love it! You can download the track via Soundcloud.

Where Will My Broken Heart Go?
Day 14 of 29 Days: Whitney Houston, "I’m Every Woman" (1992)
Day 13 of 29 Days: Whitney Houston, I’M YOUR BABY TONIGHT (1990)
Day 12 of 29 Days: Whitney Houston, WHITNEY (1987)
It was one of those LPs I bought a few years after its release (circa 1990), as I started to get more interested in music and the industry itself. I would listen to the album cut “Just The Lonely Talking Again” so much so, you’d think I was a lonely heartbroken woman gearing up for love again. (I was only 14 and I hadn’t even started dating yet.) But the singer’s vocals were so sweet, loving, sexy and grown all at the same time that I simply… connected.
Even with number-one singles such as “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me),” “So Emotional,” “Love Will Save The Day” and ballads “Didn’t We Almost Have It All” and “Where Do Broken Hearts Go,” Whitney still contained a solid collection of urban contemporary tracks to fall in love with (think: “You’re Still My Man” “Where You Are” and The Isley Brothers cover “For The Love of You”). So, no matter what the tabloids may say about her personal life, I will simply choose to remember Whitney Houston for her voice, style, beauty and grace; and most especially for giving us Whitney, one of my most favorite albums of all time.

Whitney Houston – Million Dollar Bill (New Video)
Flashback Thursday: Whitney Houston
The name Whitney Houston is synonymous with numerous labels: singer, actress, mother, daughter, producer, Grammy winner, Guinness Book of World Record-Holder, chart-topping diva. Matter of fact, her first studio effort in seven years debuted at #1 on Billboard, selling over 300,000 units in its first week, according to Neilson/Soundscan. No matter the labels, Whitney’s unmistakable voice is back, and true fans are ecstatic!
So, I finally have I Look To You (Song BMG) in hand. The album is 11-tracks of a new, with a little bit of old yet a more vibrant Whitney Houston.
Fueled by the lead single and up-tempo jams such as the Alica Keys/Swizz Beats-produced track (and my favorite), “Million Dollar Bill,” and “Like I Never Left” featuring Akon, I Look To You is a confident project. But who would’ve imagined Donny Hathaway’s classic “A Song For You” could be morphed into a dance mix? Apparently, producing-duo Stargate did. Other standouts: “Nothin’ But Love,” “I Didn’t Know My Own Strength” and “For The Lovers (my 2nd fave).”
Nonetheless, Whitney Houston’s most anticipated interview with Oprah Winfrey will air this Monday and Tuesday, Sept 14 and 15 on Oprah’s season premiere.
