New Music Monday: Blue-eyed soul singer Kendra Morris
Kendra Morris, BANSHEE (Wax Poetics Records) – Florida-bred, NYC-based Kendra Morris blends soul in a way reminiscent of Alice Smith, Joss Stone and Amy Winehouse–but in a Janis Joplin psychedelic sort of way. Her new album Banshee–partly inspired by “wailing female demons from Irish folklore”–is a project laced with late-60s, early 70s R&B, funk and rock sensibilities. Signed to Wax Poetics, the label-imprint of the respected magazine, Morris is one blue-eyed soul singer to keep an eye on. Recommended spins: “Concrete Waves”, “Right Now”, “Banshee” and my absolute fave, ”If You Didn’t Go.” For more on Kendra Morris, please visit Wax Poetics‘ website.
